Vigils for Vocations.

The "Vigil for Vocations" was established by Serra in Scotland in 1989 as a  programme
for Vocations promotion and adopted by Serra International in 2000.

Since that time we have seen expansion worldwide by Serra not just by country but also in the number of parishes participating. An estimate from a survey in 2002 indicated approximately 2000 parishes worldwide. A great achievement! Today, we know this number has increased. Our hope is that every club and country where Serra exists will encourage more and more of God's people to enjoy this form of Vocations promotion. In 2005 "Adoration for Vocations" (see below) became an integral part of the Vigil.

31 Clubs:

The 31 Club is a prayer programme asking a parishioner to choose one day of the month, it may be a birthday date or one easily remembered, when he or she will offer their Mass and pray for all priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and lay ministers who have served or are serving in their parish, and that future church vocations will be forthcoming from their community. Prayer cards and calenders are offered to parishes by Serra Great Britain to support this programme.  Contact your nearest Serra club.

 Eucharistic Adoration for vocations:

St John Paul II’s campaign entitled "In Response to His Holiness, Worldwide Adoration for Vocations." In October 2004 the Holy Father blessed six monstrances representing the six continents of the world. This is now a Serra event in many parishes throughout the world.

During Eucharistic Adoration we have included prayers of
intercessio for vocations
which will help focus our minds and hearts on the need for new vocations and the perseverance of the vocation of those who have given their lives to Our Lord.

Schools Vocations Events:

Each year Serrans organise visits to senior schools, 4-6th years.

A team of diocesan priests and religious orders with their exhibition stands show their  particular charism. A panel of speakers invite questions from students and share discussions in workshops on their vocation. The event concludes with a Mass for vocations.

Serran Prayers:

O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, grant we beseech You, through the intercession of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Saint Joseph, her spouse, Saint Junipero Serra, and all the saints, an increase in labourers for Your Church, fellow labourers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls, through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Perseverance of Vocations

O God, You have constituted Your only-begotten Son, supreme and eternal priest, for the glory of Your majesty and the salvation of mankind: grant that those whom He has chosen ministers and dispensers of His mysteries, may be found faithful in fulfilling the ministry they have received.

Prayer of Intercession

Father of Mercy. Send forth Your Life-Giving Spirit upon your Church and inspire the souls you have chosen to follow in the footsteps of Saint Junipero Serra to walk with boldness and courage in the ways of holiness and service. May Our Lady, Mother of Vocations, Star of the sea and Mother of the New Evangelisation, secure from on high the many graces we need to foster happy and healthy vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. We ask this in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Serrans

O Lord, we pray for our own vocation: give us strength in our faith so that we do not fall with difficulties and are able to be generous in Your service. Send us, O Lord, many active laypersons for the work of Serra for Vocations. Grant us a great friendship among ourselves, and make Your love grow in our hearts, so that we may help many to leave all and follow You. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
