Vigil for Vocations

The Vigil for Vocations was established by Serra in Scotland in 1989 and adopted as an external program for Vocations promotion by the Board of Serra International in 2000. Since that time the Vigil has extended into Countries and Continents from Africa, America North and South, Asia, Australia and Europe. In that time we have seen expansion not only in countries but also in the number of parishes participating. An estimate from a survey in 2002 indicated approximately 2000 parishes worldwide, a great achievement! In the subsequent years we know this number has increased. In the years ahead Serra would hope that every club and country where Serra exists encourages more and more parishes to enjoy this form of Vocations promotion. In 2005 "Adoration for Vocations" (see below) became an integral part of the Vigil.

31 Clubs

The 31 Club is a prayer program in which a parishioner chooses one date of the month when he or she will go to Mass and pray for all priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and lay ministers who have served or are serving in his or her parish, and that future church vocations will be forthcoming from the parish.

Schools Vocations Events:

Each year Serra goes into senior schools, usually 4-6th years, with a team of priests and religious and their exhibition stands showing their orders, work etc. A panel of speakers invite questions and discussions in workshops from students on their vocation and then conclude with Mass for vocations.

Adoration for Vocations:

Rome, November 24th, 2004

In response to John Paul II’s campaign entitled "In Response to His Holiness, Worldwide Adoration for Vocations". The Holy Father blessed six monstrances representing the six continents which were distributed for travel throughout the world establishing this programme which is now a Serra International event in many dioceses and parishes throughout the world.

Holy Hours:

Holy hour for priestly vocations with “Adoration for Vocations” may include, rosary, reflections, intercessions on vocations and Benediction. If you require liturgical assistance contact your local Serra club on the contacts page.

Serran Prayers

Serran Prayer for Vocations

O God, Who wills not the death of a sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, grant we beseech You, through the intercession of Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, Saint Joseph, her spouse, Saint Junipero Serra, and all the saints, an increase in labourers for Your Church, fellow labourers with Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls, through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Perseverance of Vocations

O God, You have constituted Your only-begotten Son, supreme and eternal priest, for the glory of Your majesty and the salvation of mankind: grant that those whom He has chosen ministers and dispensers of His mysteries, may be found faithful in fulfilling the ministry they have received.

Prayer of Intercession

Father of Mercy. Send forth Your Life-Giving Spirit upon your Church and inspire the souls you have chosen to follow in the footsteps of Saint Junipero Serra to walk with boldness and courage in the ways of holiness and service. May Our Lady, Mother of Vocations, Star of the sea and Mother of the New Evangelisation, secure from on high the many graces we need to foster happy and healthy vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. We ask this in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Serrans

O Lord, we pray for our own vocation: give us strength in our faith so that we do not fall with difficulties and are able to be generous in Your service. Send us, O Lord, many active laypersons for the work of Serra for Vocations. Grant us a great friendship among ourselves, and make Your love grow in our hearts, so that we may help many to leave all and follow You. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
